Kallas: US is setting a dangerous precedent by using Russian oil

The US should maintain sanctions on Russian oil despite the situation in the Middle East, believes Kaja Kallas.

It is "dangerous" that the US has eased sanctions on Russian oil.  This is what the EU's foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas, says ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday in Brussels.

- The US's easing of sanctions on Russian oil creates a dangerous precedent.  Because we are trying to ensure that Russia has less money to wage war for. Not more, says Kaja Kallas.

The EU has so far tried to hit Russia's exports of fossil fuels, among other things, with 19 sanctions packages in an attempt to stop Russia's earnings.

However, the rising oil prices as a result of the US war against Iran have prompted the White House to open up limited trade in Russian oil.  The US has opened up to buying Russian oil for 30 days until April 11. The permission comes after the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil has reached over $100.

This is a level not seen since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Although the high price level affects companies and consumers, Kaja Kallas emphasizes that it also helps Russia.

- The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is to Russia's advantage in terms of financing the war, says Kaja Kallas.

She is thus referring to the fact that Russia, as an exporter of oil, can earn more money when prices are high. That is why the EU and the US should maintain the sanctions, she believes.

- We must do more in this area, says Kaja Kallas.

In recent weeks, the EU countries have negotiated a 20th sanctions package against Russia. However, it has so far been blocked by Hungary and Slovakia. The two EU countries are demanding that Ukraine repair the Druzhba pipeline, which transports Russian oil to the two countries, before they give the green light to new sanctions.
