Oil loading has been temporarily suspended to some extent in Fujairah, an important oil hub in the United Arab Emirates. This is happening after a drone attack and a fire. This is according to industry sources according to the Reuters news agency on Saturday.
Meanwhile, images from the port city show black clouds of smoke rising. The suspension in Fujairah came a few hours after the United States attacked military targets on the Iranian oil island of Kharg. The island is of great importance to Iran's oil industry.
In response to the attack, Iran's Revolutionary Guard has said that American interests in, among others, the United Arab Emirates will be legitimate targets for Iran.
Fujairah, from which about a million barrels of oil are shipped daily, is located on the Gulf of Oman close to the Strait of Hormuz. The busy strait has been largely closed during the ongoing unrest in the Middle East. This has led to rising oil prices.
Normally 19-20 million barrels of oil are shipped from the Gulf through the strait and out into the world every day. This corresponds to around 20 percent of the world's consumption.
According to the Emirates' media office, the fire in Fujairah started after a drone was shot down and debris fell. There are no reports of injuries. Civil defense is dealing with the fire, according to a statement from the media office.
The International Energy Agency has warned of a supply crisis during the week. At the request of the IEA, Denmark has released 1,246,000 barrels of oil from emergency stocks, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities announced on Friday.
