Port of Aalborg has taken a step towards establishing new infrastructure for handling CO2 in North Jutland. On Thursday, the port marked the progress of a project that includes the establishment of 500 meters of new quay and around 60,000 square meters of quay area. This is stated by Port of Aalborg in a press release.
The quay expansion will be part of the infrastructure behind North Jutland's first large-scale CO2 reception facility and will also increase the port's capacity so that two CO2 ships can dock at the same time. The project has received support from the EU through the Connecting Europe Facility because it is part of the CO2 infrastructure project Norne Carbon Storage Hub, which has been designated as an EU Project of Common Interest. The new quay is expected to be completed in the fall of 2027.
- At a time when several green projects have experienced challenges, we are now taking concrete, physical steps towards the establishment of North Jutland's first CO2 reception facility. The quay expansion is a strategic step for Port of Aalborg, which both strengthens our role as a commercial port and creates the physical framework for the CO2 infrastructure that will eventually support permanent underground storage, says Nuuradiin Hussein, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Port of Aalborg.
Space for more green industry
The expansion also opens up more quayside commercial areas that can be used by green industry and other land-intensive activities. The areas will become part of the state-designated Aalborg Industrial Park, which is targeted at companies within green production, energy technology and heavy industry.
- With the quay expansion, we are investing in the long-term infrastructure that is necessary to attract and develop green industry. In the wind industry, access to space and quayside areas is one of the absolute biggest challenges both in Denmark and globally, as many ports are limited due to their urban locations, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl, CEO of Port of Aalborg.
Port of Aalborg is collaborating with Norne Carbon Storage Hub on the development of CO2 infrastructure in Aalborg, which in the long term will be able to receive and handle captured CO2 from Danish and European players. The parties are also open to dialogue with companies working with CO2 capture, use of CO2 as well as PtX and production of green fuels.
