Green Power Denmark: Boost in-house production of green fuels for the Danish Armed Forces

Denmark should increase the production of green fuels for the Armed Forces to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imported fossil energy for aircraft, ships and tanks. This is stated by Green Power Denmark in a press release.

The organization points out that the EU currently imports more than 90 percent of its oil consumption, while fuel reserves only have limited capacity. This makes both the EU and Denmark vulnerable to unstable energy supplies, the assessment says. Therefore, according to Green Power Denmark, Denmark should focus on its own production of green fuels based on renewable energy and PtX technology.

- Today, the EU's total oil consumption consists of more than 90 percent imports, and the EU's fuel reserves have a very limited capacity. This illustrates how dependent we are on imported fossil energy. We must and must work to become self-sufficient in energy, and the path to that is paved with green electricity that can be used directly or used as an ingredient in the production of green hydrogen and PtX fuels, says Michael Madsen, head of the PtX department at Green Power Denmark.

According to the organization, Denmark has good conditions for producing green fuels on a large scale. The country already produces more renewable energy than the energy system can use, and at the same time there is the possibility of capturing biogenic CO? from biogas and biomass-fired combined heat and power plants. Together with hydrogen, it can be used to produce synthetic fuels.

The proposal to increase the production of green fuels for the Armed Forces is included in six proposals for a future government that Green Power Denmark has presented in connection with the general election.

The organization also emphasizes that Danish ports can play a central role as logistical hubs for the production and distribution of green fuels to both Denmark and allied countries. According to Green Power Denmark, Denmark can thus become an important supply center for green fuels for both EU and NATO countries.

- The Danish ports show the potential to scale up if we accelerate the political decisions. Fuel supply is and will be a common security issue. Therefore, our call is clear: We must focus on our own production of green PtX fuels, and we must cooperate on this across national borders – both in the EU, NATO and with our Nordic neighbors, says Michael Madsen.
