A Russian captain of the tanker "Sea Owl 1" has been remanded in custody in Sweden in a case in which he is suspected of using false documents. The Swedish prosecutor's office's press service informed the news agency TT.

The ship was boarded by the Swedish coast guard on Thursday in the Baltic Sea south of Trelleborg in Skåne. "Sea Owl 1" is suspected of sailing under a false flag and is on the EU's sanctions list. The captain was arrested on Friday.

The Ystad District Court has decided that there is sufficient grounds to remand the captain. According to the Swedish coast guard, the ship has transported oil products between Russia and Brazil in recent years, writes TT.

This is the second tanker that the Swedish coast guard has boarded in a short period of time. Last week, the coast guard boarded the cargo ship "Caffa", which was loaded with grain and was on its way to St. Petersburg in Russia.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the ship had been involved in the theft of grain from the Crimean peninsula. The captain of this ship is also in custody on suspicion of using false documents.

The vessel has not been allowed to leave Trelleborg, writes the Swedish media SVT.  The "Sea Owl 1" is also not allowed to travel further. The Swedish Transport Agency has issued a navigation ban against the ship.  "Sea Owl 1" is registered in the Comoros, an archipelago located between Madagascar and the African continent.
