The airline SAS has been forced to cancel a number of flights due to higher fuel prices. This is reported by the industry media check-in.dk and Norwegian TV 2. SAS also confirms the information to Ritzau.

This applies primarily to Norway, where over 100 domestic routes have been cancelled. However, the high fuel prices have also affected other flight routes. On Tuesday, two flights from Copenhagen Airport to Oslo Airport Gardermoen were cancelled, SAS's head of communications, Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, stated in a written response to Ritzau.

- We have made a limited number of short-term adjustments to our schedule as a direct result of the fuel crisis that is currently affecting all of Europe. We are consolidating capacity on routes where alternative connections exist to ensure the most stable travel options possible for our customers, says Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji.

SAS cannot specifically state which other flights have been affected by cancellations due to fuel prices.  But not all canceled SAS flights are due to higher prices. There is also a strike in Germany, which is affecting flights, says SAS.

Continued price increases mean more cancellations

Since the US and Israel attacked Iran at the end of February, the prices of jet fuel have increased dramatically. According to IATA - the International Air Transport Association - the price has increased by 76 percent since the attacks.

If fuel prices continue to rise, there may be further cancellations, says communications manager Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji.

- In that case, it concerns limited and well-considered changes on routes where customers have alternative connections. Our focus is to protect operations, our customers and Scandinavian accessibility by acting early and responsibly, she says.

She emphasizes that the reduced capacity is temporary and that it will be restored as soon as the situation stabilizes.

SAS is not the only airline that has been forced to cancel flights due to rising prices. On Thursday, Air New Zealand announced that the company will cancel five percent of its flights until the beginning of May. This corresponds to around 1100 of the airline's departures.
