Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday took responsibility for the attack on the Iranian South Pars gas field and stressed that the United States was not involved in it. The prime minister said this at a press conference, according to the AFP news agency.
Netanyahu's statement supports US President Donald Trump's explanation that the United States was unaware of the attack. During a press conference earlier on Thursday, Trump also stressed that he had asked Netanyahu to refrain from attacking Iranian gas fields.
- I told him not to do it, and he won't do it, Trump said according to AFP, adding:
- We get along well with each other. It is coordinated, but sometimes he does something.
During Netanyahu's press conference, the Prime Minister confirms that Trump has asked him to stop the attacks on Iranian gas fields.
- President Trump asked us to refrain from future attacks, and we are doing so, the Prime Minister says at the press conference according to AFP.
At the same time, Netanyahu praises the cooperation with the US president.
- I don't think two leaders have been as coordinated as President Trump and I. He is the leader, and I am, you know, his ally, says Netanyahu.
The Iranian South Pars gas field was hit by attacks on Wednesday, and Iran subsequently warned that it would attack energy facilities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The South Pars natural gas field is the most important source of domestic energy in Iran, which at times has difficulty producing enough electricity, writes The Guardian.
Following the warning from Iran, several of Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities were hit by missile attacks on Thursday night. Among them was Ras Laffan Industrial City, which is Qatar's primary facility for the production of liquefied natural gas.
