Danes want renewable energy from solar and wind to make up the majority of their energy supply in the future. 59 percent point to solar and wind, while 27 percent prefer nuclear power.
This is shown by a representative opinion poll from Common Agenda based on 5,050 responses collected in the period 4-10 March. This is stated by Green Power Denmark in a press release, which points out that support for solar and wind is roughly the same across the country's regions.
- The opinion poll confirms the full-throated support for the energy system we have built in Denmark, and in which we are world leaders – and I understand that. Green energy is clearly the cheapest. The more we shift our energy consumption from expensive fossil fuels to cheap green electricity, the cheaper it will be to be a Dane. The same applies to companies that become much more competitive if their production is based on electricity, says Thomas Aarestrup Jepsen, political director at Green Power Denmark.
In addition to the support for renewable energy and nuclear power, 11 percent say they do not know, while 2 percent point to biogas and 1 percent to fossil energy sources such as oil, coal and gas.
According to Green Power Denmark, several other studies point in the same direction. For example, TrygFonden's 2025 Security Survey showed that 63 percent answered 'yes' to the statement that "it is OK for me that wind turbines are set up near where I live".
Green Power Denmark warns against nuclear power
The study also shows that more than one in four Danes prefer nuclear power as the foundation of the energy supply in the future. The energy form has been extensively debated in the current election campaign.
However, Green Power Denmark does not believe that this is the path to take, as the organization does not believe that the energy form is profitable.
- We must be able to agree that we need green and cheap electricity that can cover our consumption at all times of the day. And we can get that without investing billions in nuclear power, because the electrification of Denmark is still developing rapidly, and electricity has never been greener. The opinion poll speaks clearly: Nuclear power is not the Danes' preferred path. Let's instead concentrate on what works, says Thomas Aarestrup Jepsen.
