US President Donald Trump will suspend attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks if Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz. Trump wrote this on his social media, Truth Social.
The message comes after the president previously set a deadline that would expire at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday night, Danish time. Trump had earlier on Tuesday threatened Iran that "an entire civilization is going to die tonight".
Trump writes in the post that he has spoken with Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who on Tuesday called on the warring parties to enter into a two-week ceasefire and let diplomacy work.
- Provided that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to a complete, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to cease bombing and attacking Iran for a period of two weeks.
Israel has also agreed to enter into a temporary ceasefire, an unnamed White House official tells CNN.
Iran confirms
Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, confirms that Iran's Security Council is willing to enter into a ceasefire in order to begin negotiations. This is stated in a post on the social media X.
The Security Council is ready to suspend "defensive operations" and open the Strait of Hormuz if the attacks on Iran are stopped, it says.
- For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible if coordinated with Iran's military and taking into account technical limitations, writes Araghchi.
Donald Trump writes that the United States has received an Iranian proposal for an agreement between the parties.
- We have received a ten-point proposal from Iran and believe that it is a useful basis for negotiation.
- Almost all of the various previous points of contention have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but a period of two weeks will make it possible to finalize and conclude the agreement, writes Trump.
