Israel attacked a petrochemical complex in Asaluyeh on Monday at the South Pars gas field in southern Iran. This was announced by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, according to Reuters.
Earlier, the Iranian news agency Fars reported several explosions in the area. In the petrochemical industry, oil and gas are processed and used to produce various products.
South Pars, located in the Persian Gulf, is part of the world's largest natural gas field, which is shared between Iran and Qatar. The operator of the complex says that the situation is "under control".
- A fire has been brought under control. The situation is currently under control, and the technical aspects, as well as the extent of the damage, are being investigated, according to the National Petrochemical Company. This is reported by AFP, citing the Iranian news agency IRNA.
According to Israel Katz, the complex accounts for about 50 percent of the country's petrochemical production. In March, South Pars was also attacked by Israel.
Subsequently, US President Donald Trump threatened to blow up the entire natural gas field if Iran did not stop attacking energy facilities in Qatar.
In recent days, Israel has hit key industrial sectors as part of the ongoing war against Iran. This is reported by the AFP news agency.
On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israeli attacks had destroyed about 70 percent of Iran's steel production capacity. According to AFP, this weakens Iran's ability to manufacture weapons. Steel is a strategically important material used in industrial and military production, including for missiles, drones and ships.
Defense Minister Israel Katz says that he and Netanyahu have ordered the military "to continue to attack Iran's national infrastructure with full force".
The US and Israel launched the war against Iran on February 28. On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that negotiations between Iran and the United States, led by Pakistan, have stalled. This was reported by unnamed mediators to the American media.
US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he will hold a press conference with the military at the White House at 1:00 p.m. local time on Monday. That is 7:00 p.m. Danish time.
