ODENSE / KERTEMINDE: A dog walker's video recording of a pair of otters in love in Odense Fjord could mean delays in an expected port expansion of Odense Port at Lindø. This is reported by TV2 Fyn.

The otter is a protected animal and the construction work on the 1 million square meter large port expansion risks negatively affecting the otters' living conditions, explains Ditte Bølle Jensen, a biologist at Fjord & Bælt.

- For the otter, it will mean that many of the animals it feeds on, such as kelp, dogfish and cod fry, will most likely disappear from the area. This will mean that the otter will lose some of its food source, says Ditte Bølle Jensen. She is supported by Håkun Djurhuus, a lawyer specializing in environmental law and public law, who expects that the otter pair will delay the port expansion.

In November last year, the otter also created challenges for the port expansion. A video of an otter climbing up the dike at Odense Port also meant at that time that the expansion risked being delayed.

Political opposition

It is not only protected animals that are challenging the expansion of Odense Port. In Kerteminde Municipality, there have been political discussions about the port expansion for a long time.

In January, 12 out of the city council's 25 members agreed that they would say no to the expansion, and according to a recently discovered memo, the municipality can stop the project without being met with a claim for compensation.

In February, it emerged that a critical engineering report from last year, prepared by the Port of Odense's advisor, the engineering company Sweco, was incorrectly archived, and therefore the politicians in Kerteminde did not see the report until Fyens Stiftstidende found it through a document access last month.

In the report, the engineers emphasize that if the port expansion is carried out, it will not happen because the project has been assessed as environmentally sound, but because the politicians choose to deviate from the protection of Odense Fjord.

The port expansion could also end up removing all effects of the green tripartite for many years to come, the report estimates.
