KERTEMINDE / ODENSE: Despite great opposition, work continues on a possible expansion of the Port of Odense, after a narrow majority in Kerteminde City Council has decided to let the process continue, writes Fyens Stiftstidende. The new majority consisting of K, Hverdagens Stemme, LA and DF has 15 mandates and Michael Nielsen (K) as mayor. But only K wants to continue the port plans, while the other three parties went to the polls to stop them. Nevertheless, there is still a majority of 13 out of 25 mandates, as S (with the exception of Lars Hansborg-Sørensen) and V want to examine the project more closely.
However, the majority has imposed six conditions on the work. The expansion must not worsen traffic in Munkebo, damage the natural and marine environment or have negative consequences for Munkebo School or the citizens' living conditions. The municipality's finances and the need for new infrastructure must also be fully mapped out.
According to incoming mayor Michael Nielsen, the conditions are "brake pads", but not a final stop, as solutions can still be found: "We have closed the door a little more. It doesn't take much in the analyses we are waiting for before the door is closed completely. If the door was ajar before, it is even less open now," he says.
Not a green light
Kristian Hald from Hverdagens Stemme, who ran for office to stop the port expansion, acknowledges that despite the narrow majority, there is still support for continuing the studies. He also emphasizes to TV2 Fyn that the support for Michael Nielsen as mayor is not a green light for the project.
- Absolutely not. I have not committed to saying yes at any time. We will never give mandates for an expansion. In return, we have obliged the Conservatives and the new mayor to say no under a number of conditions, and that is the best result that could be achieved in this constitution, he says.
According to the not yet published agreement, the parties are not obligated by each other on the issue of a possible port expansion and can therefore act independently.
