New political initiatives have not led to more competition on petrol and diesel

A price check conducted by FDM still shows similar prices across the country 100 days after new rules, which were supposed to create more competition.

There is still no sign of increased competition for gasoline and diesel in Denmark, even if new political initiatives were to change the market. This is shown by a price check that FDM has carried out at 44 gas stations across the country. FDM states this in a press release.

On Tuesday morning, a liter of gasoline cost DKK 16.09, while diesel cost DKK 17.59 at all unmanned gas stations in the study. At manned stations, the price was 10 øre higher per liter. Later in the day, the price of diesel increased by 80 øre, but the prices were still the same at all stations – now 18.39 or 18.49 kr. per liter depending on the service.

The same prices are coming, even though since December there has been a ban on publishing recommended prices before price changes, and since January 1, companies have had to publish local standard prices online.

- We are now 100 days into 2026 and we can still see that the prices of gasoline and diesel are completely the same, whether you fill up in the Capital Region, Hadsund or Horsens. In other words, there is still no competition on fuel, and thus the two initiatives have not had the effect we had hoped for, says Ilyas Dogru, a consumer economist at FDM.

According to Minister of Industry Morten Bødskov, the expectation was that the initiatives would create more competition and give households with two cars the opportunity to save up to DKK 2,000 per year.

FDM points out that a similar price check in December showed the same picture at more than 90 gas stations. The organization therefore assesses that competition is still insufficient and calls on the authorities to examine the fuel market more closely, possibly with inspiration from Germany.

- You can possibly be inspired by Germany, where the authorities now require documentation for pricing, says Ilyas Dogru.
