The Port of Rotterdam is now moving into a market where Esbjerg has had a dominant position for two decades. The Dutch port plans to develop a 45-hectare area in the northwestern corner of Maasvlakte for offshore wind activities. This will include space for the preparation, installation and dismantling of offshore wind turbines. It says JydskeVestkysten.
The plan involves an 835-meter-long quay that will be able to handle the largest installation ships on the market. The expansion is part of the port's strategy to play a greater role in the European green transition and attract more players in the offshore industry. The investment comes at a time when several European ports are gearing up for the rapidly growing sector. The Port of Esbjerg has been a base for shipping offshore wind farms for many years and is described as Europe's leading port in the field.
- With this new terminal, we are making an important contribution to the necessary capacity for the offshore wind sector, says Matthijs van Doorn, head of commercial activities at the Port of Rotterdam.
