In several places in Denmark, the temperature reached over 30 degrees in early July 2025. It is already certain that the year will go down as one of the warmest in Danish measurement history. (Archive photo).

2025 will be the fourth warmest year in Denmark

Danish measurement history dates back to 1874, and here 2025 writes itself into the books with a top ranking.

2025 has not yet come to an end, but it is already clear that the year will be the fourth warmest since 1874. This is what the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) writes in a press release. DMI's best guess is that the year's average temperature will end at 9.6 or 9.7 degrees.

- If we look at the top 10 warmest years in Denmark, it is thought-provoking that it consists exclusively of years from the past 20 years. And if we delve into how the heat is distributed throughout the year, it is often a warm winter half-year that creates a warm year, says Mikael Scharling, a climatologist at DMI.

2024 remains the third warmest year, and 2022, which previously shared fourth place with 2007 and 2018, is now relegated to fifth place.

However, 2025 stands out in particular compared to the other years in the top 10. In 2025, all months, except August, were above normal temperatures.

Expect the same trend in the future

According to DMI, this will be far from a rarity in the future. Climate change is gradually increasing the likelihood of warmer years and temperature records in Denmark.

- The fact that the ten warmest years have all occurred within the past 20 years shows that gradual warming is underway and that the climate is changing. Even though the weather in Denmark has fluctuated from year to year, says DMI climate researcher Rasmus Anker Pedersen.

Therefore, it is not a surprise to the climate researcher that there is frequent change in the top rankings over the warmest years.

So far, the month of December has done its part to end the year on a warm note. In the first nine days of the winter month, the average temperature was 6.2 degrees, which is almost 4 degrees higher than the normal temperature for a December month.

According to DMI's forecasts, the mild weather will continue for at least another week.
