Three new offshore wind farms have come a small step closer to realization on Friday. The Danish Energy Agency has granted permission to commence preliminary investigations at sea for the Kattegat II and Kriegers Flak II areas as well as for the new location of the Hesselø offshore wind farm. The agency announced this in a press release.

Energinet will start the preliminary investigations in the first quarter of 2023. The investigations will include geophysical and geotechnical investigations of the areas designated as potential offshore wind farms as well as possible cable landfall corridors. In addition, marine biological investigations will be carried out in a larger area around the three potential offshore wind farms.

The preliminary investigation permit does not in itself give the right to construct offshore wind turbines, but it gives Energinet the right to collect relevant data and information about the designated sea areas. The results of the investigations will, among other things, contribute to the later strategic environmental assessment (SEA).

The three offshore wind farms in play

The possible offshore wind farms have different histories. For the Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm, which is set to have an effect of between 800-1200 MW, preliminary studies have already been initiated and tender processes have been underway, targeting a location in another area.

However, in June 2021, the tender process for the Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm was put on hold, as Energinet's initial preliminary studies showed that there was soft ground in large parts of the area designated for the Offshore Wind Farm.

With the Danish Parliament's Climate Agreement on Green Electricity and Heat 2022, it was then decided to relocate the Offshore Wind Farm to the area south of the original location with a view to the park being connected to the grid from 2028 and fully established in 2029. It is this location that will now be investigated by Energinet.

The two other possible offshore wind farms, Kattegat II and Kriegers Flak II, which have now been given the go-ahead, have had quite such a turbulent 'life'. permission to start feasibility studies for, not had.

Both of these possible projects are being investigated as a result of the 'Climate Agreement on Green Power and Heat 2022'. Here, it was decided to initiate feasibility studies for all known attractive offshore wind locations from the 2022 screening.

The Kriegers Flak II and Kattegat II areas were identified as attractive areas in the 2022 screening, and the feasibility studies therein are therefore being initiated prior to a final political decision on the location of offshore wind farms in the areas.
