The Danish Energy Agency pauses the tender for Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm

Energinet has discovered that the seabed in the designated area for Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm is not as suitable as initially assumed. New investigations are therefore needed.

More difficult than expected soil conditions have been found at the location designated for the Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm. This is shown by the preliminary results of the preliminary investigations that Energinet initiated in the area in 2020.

Specifically, Energinet's preliminary seabed investigations have found soft clay bottom, especially in the upper 20-30 meters below the seabed in large parts of the area designated for the offshore wind farm.

The new knowledge about the seabed means that further analyses of the results are necessary. Therefore, the Danish Energy Agency has chosen to pause the tender for the offshore wind farm. In the meantime, Energinet's consultants will work on laboratory analyses of the strength properties of the soft bottom.

Unclear with consequences for schedule

The analyses are expected to be completed in the fall of 2021. The Danish Energy Agency will take these results to a new market dialogue to discuss the consequences of the results with market players.

Energinet writes that the break does not immediately have consequences for the schedule for the feasibility studies and the environmental assessment process. Energinet is therefore continuing its work as planned with environmental assessments on land and at sea.

The Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm was announced in connection with the 2018 energy agreement and was confirmed in last summer's climate agreement for energy and industry.

The Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm is planned to have a capacity of 800-1,200 MW and is expected to be put into operation and connected to the electricity grid in 2027. It is not clear from the Danish Energy Agency's announcement whether the break will have consequences for the overall schedule.
