The UK is preparing a new tender round for offshore wind, where the Crown Estate, which manages the UK seabed and large areas of land on behalf of the state, plans to bring up to 6 GW of new capacity into play from 2027.
The upcoming leasing round, Offshore Wind Leasing Round 6, is expected to be launched in the first half of 2027 and will focus in particular on areas off the coast of North East England. Here, seabed conditions are considered to be suitable for fixed offshore wind turbines, which currently make up the majority of the development.
According to the Crown Estate, the tender could create up to 10,000 direct jobs and provide an economic boost of over £12 billion (over DKK 100 billion). At the same time, it should contribute to strengthening energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
- The UK is a global leader in offshore wind, and this is a success that we must recognise. A new tender round focusing on North East England could create billions of kroner in value for the economy, more jobs and cheaper energy for both citizens and businesses, says Dan Labbad, CEO of the Crown Estate.
The UK offshore wind sector is today the largest source of green power in the country, supplying electricity equivalent to around half of all households. At the same time, there is almost 17 GW of installed capacity and a further 12 GW under construction.
- Current events in the Middle East show how important it is to base the energy system of the future on domestic energy produced in British waters. The North Sea has become a powerhouse for offshore wind, which strengthens energy security, keeps energy prices down and brings us closer to energy independence. This new round of tenders for projects off the North East of England will open up significant new capacity in the energy system – enough to supply more than six million homes, says Jane Cooper, Deputy Chief Executive of RenewableUK.
The final capacity and specific locations for the new round will be determined following dialogue with the market and based on the National Energy Plan. The Crown Estate is also working on a new planning model that will provide a better overview of future offshore wind areas and support a more coordinated expansion.
