Europe and the world are potentially facing a new energy crisis after the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has sent oil and gas prices up significantly.

Several European countries are in the process to adapt their energy policy to the new situation. But according to WindEurope, Germany and the UK in particular have already presented concrete measures to increase the expansion of wind energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. This is stated by WindEurope in a press release.

WindEurope points out that the government in Germany will increase the supply of onshore wind by another 12 GW towards 2030 as a direct response to the conflict in the Middle East. In the UK, the government has decided to bring forward a major tender round for renewable energy to July 2026. Here, up to 18 offshore wind projects can bid together with new projects within onshore wind and solar energy.

- With the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Europe has once again been reminded of its dependence on unreliable fossil fuels. This crisis is not an isolated incident. It is the new normal. Home-produced electricity is Europe's only future-proof energy strategy. Germany and the UK are now accelerating wind energy. Other member states should do the same to protect industry and consumers from rising electricity prices, says Tinne van der Straeten, CEO of WindEurope.

WindEurope points out that an analysis by the research house Ember shows that countries with lower dependence on gas for electricity production are less exposed to fluctuations in electricity prices. In Spain, gas has only affected the electricity price for 15 percent of the hours in 2026 so far, compared to 89 percent in Italy. This has contributed to lower electricity prices in Spain than in other EU countries since the conflict in Iran began and strengthened the country's competitiveness.
