AARHUS: The current plans for a major expansion of the Port of Aarhus are currently being actively debated in Denmark's second largest city. At an information meeting this week, figures were put forward on how large an investment the expansion entails. This is reported by Jyllands Posten.
- These are investments in the order of DKK 2.5-3 billion. The Port of Aarhus's coffers are the sole ones that pay for the project, and our finances are separate from the municipality's finances, so the citizens will not have to pay. We will find the money partly in our own coffers and partly through loans, which will be financed from the profits of the coming years, said Kim Meilstrup, head of infrastructure at the Port of Aarhus at the meeting about the port expansion.
The expansion is necessary, as the port is already stretched to capacity. Currently, for example, Mærsk has already been granted a dispensation to stack up to eight containers high, which exceeds the normal height requirements and is also expensive and cumbersome. At the city hall in Aarhus, there is a majority in favor of the expansion, as both the Conservatives, the Liberal Party and the Social Democrats have announced their support for the project.
