The Port of Aarhus handled an average of 1,000 tons of cargo every hour last year. And 2021 was generally a good year for the port, which experienced growth in all business areas. Total turnover increased by 889,000 tons of cargo to more than ten million tons of cargo, the port said in a press release.
The largest growth was in container turnover, which increased by 15 percent. The increase even comes against the background that the port has broken container turnover records in recent years. Over the past five years, revenue has increased by 58 percent.
- While many other ports in the world have been burdened by the fact that global supply chains are under pressure and cargo has piled up, resulting in major delays, here in Aarhus we have been able to take the ships in and dispatch the cargo "on time", says Thomas Haber Borch, CEO of the Port of Aarhus.
Less corona has made growth easy in some areas
The director himself points to satisfaction with the bulk area, even though the increases here are more modest. The "passengers" business area, not surprisingly, showed significant growth, which can, among other things, can be explained by the fact that the pandemic has not imposed as many restrictions on travel activity between the regions of the country in 2021 as was the case in 2020.
The turnover in project cargo has more than doubled, but still at a modest level, while the ro-ro area is realizing growth slightly above average. Thomas Haber Borch also points out the curious fact that the port made progress in the cruise area in 2021.
- And then some may be surprised that we have made progress in cruises. It is also a bit of a curiosity, as in 2021 we had one call compared to zero the year before - and therefore progress, he says.
However, the port believes that the cruise industry will rise again. Among other things, during the corona period, a decision has been made to invest in a shore power plant for cruise ships. When the facility is ready in 2023, cruises will be a business area that the company will once again focus on.
