New Danish record: Port of Aarhus handles container no. 623,890

A month and a half before the end of the year, the Port of Aarhus has broken its own Danish record for container turnover.

AARHUS: In December last year, the Port of Aarhus announced that it had broken the Danish record for container turnover, and that it would only expand that record for the rest of the year.

However, 2021 has been even busier, and thus the cranes at the Port of Aarhus have already lifted container number 623,890 over the quay, and thus the port has already broken its Danish record from last year. Therefore, the port has barely a month and a half this year to expand its new record.

According to CEO Thomas Haber Borch, an analysis of turnover shows that exports of containerized goods are still somewhat larger than imports, but the largest increases in 2021 have occurred in the import area.

- All-time highs in turnover always give a good feeling, which is further reinforced because we have the impression that more importers are choosing Aarhus as a destination rather than sailing the goods to Hamburg and then driving them to Denmark, states Thomas Haber Borch.

He points out that the - perhaps - changed behavior both creates more jobs and more growth in Denmark, while at the same time saving CO2 to sail the goods all the way to Denmark.

- We can see from the latest figures from Statistics Denmark that we are currently increasing our market share. For a long period, we have had approximately 65 percent of the container turnover in this country, but now we are approaching 70 percent. Of course, this could be an expression that we take something from other Danish ports, but my feeling is that we get most of it from abroad, says Thomas Haber Borch.
