Criticism of Denmark's largest port expansion is growing. In recent months, several researchers have criticized the expansion, which they say will have a number of negative consequences for the environment. Last week, Information revealed that the company behind Aarhus Port has not examined the climate consequences of an expected increase in the number of trucks and container ships in its environmental impact report.

This is now causing several parties in Aarhus City Council to criticize the company behind Aarhus Port. This is reported by Dagbladet Information.

- Of course, that is a problem. The report must live up to the clear framework that exists in the area, says Liv Gro Jensen (SF) to Information.

- When you have to make a decision like this, which has great significance for Aarhus and for the climate far into the future, it is important that we have as much information as possible and that the climate issue is highlighted in particular, says Jakob Søgaard Clausen (DF) to Information.

The politicians have not yet taken a final position on the expansion. If it is adopted, the port will have to be expanded by around one million square meters of port area over the coming decades with new container terminals and more cranes, which will create space for 50 percent more containers and 50 percent more more ships and trucks.

Uncertain impact on climate goals

In Aarhus, the city council decided more than ten years ago that the municipality should be climate neutral by 2030, but according to Metin Lindved Aydin (R), an expansion of the port could make it more difficult to achieve that goal.

- We already have difficulty staying below the line. This year we are over, and further ahead it could look even worse, he tells Information.

Thure Hastrup (EL) will ask the Port of Aarhus for an answer as to why the CO2 emissions from ships and trucks are not included in the report.

- We cannot start a construction project if it later turns out that it increases emissions considerably, he tells Information.

According to the company behind the Port of Aarhus, there is great uncertainty in calculating emissions from trucks and ships in the future. Therefore, according to port director Thomas Haber Borch, the calculations have not been made.

Member of the Aarhus City Council for the Liberal Party Gert Bjerregaard believes that the company behind the Port of Aarhus must "of course" meet the requirements from the authorities. But he is not worried about the climate in connection with the enlargement.

The Conservatives and the Social Democrats are both in favor of the current plans for an enlargement, while the remaining parties are either against it or have yet to announce their intention.
