Major port expansion of the Port of Aarhus submitted for consultation

AARHUS: The plans to expand the Port of Aarhus are now entering a new phase. An eight-week consultation phase is now underway regarding the port's desire to expand the East Harbour with a new harbour basin and new land areas of up to one square kilometre, writes Aarhus Stiftstidende

The major expansion has not yet been adopted, and the consultation comes on the basis of a recently completed almost 700-page long EIA study. This is the one that Aarhus City Council sent out for consultation on Thursday. According to the Diocese, the desire for expansion appears to have great support in the city council and comes against the backdrop of increasing space problems at the port.

- The pressure on the port's area is so great that we, from the Department of Technology and Environment, have given permission to dispense, so that empty containers can be stacked in eight layers rather than five, which was what was originally allowed. This says everything that the need for more space is already there today, said the councilor, who together with the Liberal Party supports the plans for an expansion, said Councilor for Technology and Environment, Bünyamin Simsek (V) at the city council meeting.

The VMM study contains several visualizations of the upcoming expansion's impact on the landscape. The EIA can be read by clicking here.
