There is a lack of space at the Port of Aarhus. The areas are close to being fully utilized due to the stagnation in turnover in both containers and bulk goods. The companies at the port need more space to meet the increasing demand and future needs.
Due to the current pressure on the areas and the security of supply, there are not many opportunities to optimize the current areas further. Therefore, the Port of Aarhus and Danish Shipping and Port Companies are now initiating a process where the parties will look at whether and how it is possible to optimize the areas in connection with the establishment of the Outer Harbor. This is stated by the Port of Aarhus in a statement.
- The agreement emphasizes that we and the companies that use the port want to create the most efficient utilization of the areas in connection with an expansion. We are currently experiencing a significant increase in cargo turnover. This is putting pressure on capacity and areas to an extent that we have not seen before. At the same time, we are in the midst of a green transition of society, and new types of goods are finding their way to Aarhus. Therefore, it is necessary to plan for current areas for a port expansion now, says Thomas Haber Borch, CEO of the Port of Aarhus.
First agreement of its kind
The agreement between the Port of Aarhus and Danish Shipping and Port Companies is the first of its kind in Denmark. The decision on the port expansion is currently a big topic in Aarhus, where many believe the expansion is too drastic. Lars Jespersen does not share this view, however.
- There can be no doubt that an expansion of the Port of Aarhus is urgently needed. There have been requests to optimize the current areas at the Port of Aarhus instead of expanding. But firstly, optimization is already a large part of the everyday life of all port companies today. Secondly, we simply cannot move or relocate when there is no available area and capacity for it. That is why we are also pleased that we can enter into the agreement with the Port of Aarhus today, so that we can help to future-proof the port's areas and the companies' progress and jobs, he says
