Wind turbine test center could threaten the Wadden Sea's UNESCO status

The Danish Nature Agency writes to the Ministry of the Environment that a test center could mean that the Wadden Sea is deleted from the list of World Heritage Sites.

ESBJERG / TØNDER: "It is assessed that there is a real risk that UNESCO will find a test center incompatible with the area's status as a world heritage site, and that the area will be completely or partially deleted from the world heritage list." This is according to JydskeVestkysten in an email from head of department at the Danish Nature Agency Jesper Tranberg to the Ministry of the Environment.

As previously mentioned, several areas in the Wadden Sea and in Vendsyssel are in play as suitable locations for a third national test center for wind turbines. There is a need for a third center because the two current ones in Østerild and Høvsøre have reached their maximum capacity.

Esbjerg and Tønder municipalities have both protested that a test center in the Wadden Sea is even being considered.

- As a municipality, we are not even allowed to set up tables and benches in that area, but the state is apparently allowed to set up 450-meter-high wind turbines. That doesn't seem very well thought out, said Esbjerg's mayor, Jesper Frost Rasmussen (V), for example to TV Avisen.

Local knowledge

Jesper Tranberg explains to JydskeVestkysten that because the Danish Nature Agency is present locally in the area and is collaborating on the world heritage, the email wanted to make sure that it would be included in the considerations about a future test center.

He also emphasizes that Denmark cannot necessarily make a decision about a test center without involving the Netherlands and Germany.

The German and Dutch part of the Wadden Sea was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2009, and in 2014 it was expanded to include the Danish part. According to the Danish Agency for Palaces and Culture, the Wadden Sea is the world's largest continuous tidal area.
