The government has no desire to set up wind turbines at the Wadden Sea

Even before a screening process to find a location for a large wind turbine test center is complete, the government is now announcing that it has no desire to locate it in the Wadden Sea area.

- I have no desire to locate a wind turbine test center at the Wadden Sea. None of us want that. But we have to treat things in an equal way and thus conduct these studies in all the places that are relevant, says Minister for Rural Areas Louise Schack Elholm (V) on Wednesday in an interview with TV Syd.

Three areas in the Wadden Sea area were otherwise designated by the Danish Housing and Planning Agency as potential locations for a large wind turbine test center. The announcement comes in the middle of an ongoing screening process that a large number of parties agreed to initiate in 2022.

The announcement also comes on the same day as a large meeting between, among others, politicians, citizens, the Wadden Sea National Park and the Danish Ornithological Society (DOF). The Wadden Sea National Park and the DOF in particular have been strong opponents of placing a large testing center in the area right next to the Wadden Sea, which is a protected Natura 2000 area.

Natura 2000 areas are designated by the EU and involve the protection of animal and plant life, including bird protection areas. Therefore, the Danish Ornithological Society is also pleased with the minister's announcement.

- I am really happy about that. It would have been a disaster for the entire Natura 2000 network if they had set out to build such facilities in the most sacred natural area, says Egon Østergaard, chairman of the Danish Ornithological Association (DOF) BirdLife.

The minister also tells TV Syd that the government is open to looking at other possible locations in addition to the six areas that have been identified in the screening process.
