The Danish Parliament has decided on Tuesday to remove the electricity tax for the next two years, thus saving a family with two children and two adults in the house approximately 4000 kroner per year. This is being done to counteract the high prices in the supermarket, according to the government.

It has previously been said that it is not possible to differentiate the VAT on food due to old IT systems. Instead, the electricity tax will be lowered from 2026.

- I would like to say to the Danes that we have seen and heard you. And I am very concerned that we ensure here and now that Danes will experience more money in their hands, says Tax Minister Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen (S) in a statement.

It was agreed to lower the tax in connection with the 2026 Finance Act, which the Conservatives entered into with the multi-party government.

The electricity tax will be lowered to the EU's minimum rate of 0.8 øre per kilowatt.

Those who use the most electricity will also save the most. A retired couple in a house will get approximately 2700 kroner extra.

- It has become expensive for many Danes to make ends meet when they are out shopping. So when we now reduce the electricity tax to the lowest level, we are taking a significant and noticeable first step to help the many Danes who are struggling with rising prices, says the Minister of Taxation.

The government is working on a possible solution to differentiate the VAT on food, but it is unknown whether this will happen.
