Vestas is the world's second most sustainable company. This is according to the Canadian research house Corporate Knights, which for the 19th year in a row has named the world's 100 most sustainable companies with a turnover of over one billion dollars.
Vesta's ranking as number 2 is due, among other things, to the wind turbine manufacturer's goal of achieving CO2 neutrality for its own activities by 2030 and to produce fully recyclable wind turbines by 2040.
- We are proud to be recognized as the most sustainable company in the energy industry and the second most sustainable company in the world. The ranking is a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainability and the great progress we have made with the implementation of our sustainability strategy, says Lisa Ekstrand, Vice President, Sustainability at Vestas, in a statement from the Danish Chamber of Commerce.
Ørsted drops back
In addition to Vestas, five other Danish companies are on the list. The Danish companies on the list besides Vestas are: Ørsted (14), Rockwool (16), Hansen Holding (18), Novozymes (23) and Coloplast (43).
Ørsted, which has won the award several times and was number seven last year, has dropped significantly on the list, among other things, as a result of the company being ordered by the Danish government to postpone the phasing out of coal at several of its power plants, which was otherwise planned for 2023. In addition, the company has increased the use of coal at the same power plants in 2022, due to the lack of natural gas imports from Russia.
Despite Ørsted's decline, the Danish Business Council is pleased with the Danish companies' placement on the list, which, according to the organization, shows that Danish companies are and will continue to be part of the solution to global challenges.
- Even though we are a small country, Danish business has shown time and again that we are among the top of the global elite when it comes to combining business and sustainability - and a green and social transition. We must maintain and further cement this leading position,” says Ellen Marie Friis, CSR manager at Dansk Erhverv.
Number one on the list is American Schnitzer Steel, which recycles metal. The entire list can be read here.
