Power plants are extended: :
Ørsted is going in search of crew and coal

It will be a challenge, but we will reach our goal, says Ørsted about the postponed closure of power plants.

More coal and oil will have to be purchased, and up to 50 new employees will have to be hired when the closure of parts of three power plants is postponed.

This is the announcement from the owner of the plants, the energy company Ørsted, after the government decided to postpone the closure in order to secure the electricity supply for the next two winters.

- It will definitely be a challenge, especially on the personnel side. But it is a task that we expect to be able to solve, says press advisor Carsten Birkeland Kjær, Ørsted.

The government announced on Saturday that it will postpone the closure of the coal-fired Esbjerg power plant, which was otherwise scheduled to close at the end of March next year.

In addition, it will resume operation of Studstrupværket's unit 4 and Kyndbyværket's unit 21, which were otherwise closed in April 2022 and June 2020, respectively.

The two power plant units at Aarhus and Jægerspris respectively are fired with coal and oil.

The plan is to reduce the risk that Danes will lack power in their sockets for the next two winters.

The closed power plant units must be given a loving hand to be brought up to date, and in addition, new employees must be hired to operate the electricity production.

- To get the three plants running, we need to find 45-50 new employees. It's not necessarily an easy task, because it's very specialized work.

- We also hope that we can extend the contracts of some of the employees at Esbjerg Power Plant who have until now believed that their workplace closed on April 1, 2023, says Carsten Birkeland Kjær.

According to the press advisor, it will take up to six months before the two closed power plant units can be up and running again.

One of Ørsted's tasks will also be to procure extra fuels.

- Esbjerg Power Plant has purchased for operation until April. We will now start entering into contracts with coal suppliers so that the plant can continue, just as coal and oil will have to be purchased to run the units at Studstrupværket and Kyndbyværket, he says.

The closure of the three plants will be postponed until June 30, 2024.

The postponement may lead to increased CO2 emissions. However, because these are temporary measures, it is not expected to affect the 2025 target.

It is a target that the Folketing has set, to reduce CO2 emissions by 50-54 percent in 2025.

In 2030, the target is a 70 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the level in 1990.
