A decade ago, Ørsted - then Dong Energy - was one of the energy companies in Europe that was most dependent on fossil fuels. Now Ørsted has been named the world's most sustainable company. This is what Ørsted itself writes on their website, after the media outlet Corporate Knight has made their annual top 100 list of sustainable companies.
Thereby, Ørsted overtakes Chr. Hansen Holding A/S, which topped the list in 2019. Novozymes was also in the top 10.
- We are incredibly proud to have been named the world's most sustainable company. Where we were previously a traditional energy company based on fossil fuels, we are now one of the world's largest companies within renewable energy. Every day we deliver green energy solutions on an industrial scale to combat climate change, the biggest challenge of our time, says Henrik Poulsen, CEO of Ørsted.
The offshore wind farms that Ørsted has built today supply more than 13 million people with green electricity, and Ørsted's plan is to increase this number to 50 million by 2030. Ørsted has also reduced CO2 emissions from its energy production and operations by 83 percent since 2006, and Corporate Knight calls Ørsted a 'model for the industry' for their large-scale and efficient energy transition.
- Although we are grateful to have been named the world's most sustainable company, we would rather see the world develop in a more sustainable direction. Global greenhouse gas emissions have been increasing for decades and are now at their highest level ever. There is no time to waste if we are to stop global warming and halve global emissions by 2030, as climate science recommends, says Henrik Poulsen.
- Ørsted has become a sustainable and profitable company by making green energy the focal point of its business strategy. Companies that do not do anything now to reduce their CO2 emissions risk having their business model come under pressure in the future. We encourage all companies to make reducing their CO2 emissions a central part of their strategy.
Vestas and Novo Nordisk were also on the list, ranked 37th and 71st, respectively.
