Ørsted used 18 percent more coal in 2022

950,000 tons of coal - that's how much Ørsted's combined heat and power plants burned in 2022. This is an increase in coal consumption of a full 18 percent compared to the previous year. The increase comes despite the company's ambition to phase out the use of coal, writes Børsen.

- This goes directly against our ambition, and it's a setback. We don't hide that. Our ambition is to solve energy crises by expanding renewable energy, but it takes some time. In the interim period, we have had to use coal, says CEO of Ørsted's combined heat and power plants Ole Thomsen

Ørsted's goal has long been to completely phase out coal by 2023. But that ambition has now been pushed to the sidelines. The reason for the increasing coal consumption is the war in Ukraine, which has made it more difficult for Ørsted to obtain biomass, among other things, since a large part of this comes from Russia, which is subject to sanctions. Therefore, the Danish authorities have ordered Ørsted to continue to keep the coal-fired power plants running in order to secure the electricity supply.
