Ørsted has achieved a hat-trick by being named the world's most sustainable energy company for the third year in a row. The award comes from the media outlet Corporate Knight.

On the list, which covers all types of companies in the world with a turnover of over one billion USD, Ørsted moves down one place from first to second place. First place has been taken over by the French Schneider Electric SE.

Corporate Knights has analyzed publicly available data on financial and sustainability indicators for over 8,000 companies.

- We are very pleased with our continued high ranking in the Global 100, which reflects both our focused efforts to run a sustainable and profitable business and our ambition to be a catalyst for the global transition to green energy, says Mads Nipper, CEO and Group President of Ørsted.

In a decade, Ørsted has evolved from being one of the energy companies in Europe that was most dependent on fossil fuels to today being a company that others look to in their quest to become more sustainable.

Ørsted will also promote this position in the coming time by sharing knowledge and insights from its own transformation journey and helping to spur a green transition across all sectors of society:

- The Ørsted transformation is not a standard solution, and our learnings are not necessarily relevant to all companies, but I hope that by sharing our experiences of transforming and performing at the same time, we can help inspire other companies to accelerate the green transition, says Mads Nipper.

Green transition is profitable

Ørsted has built offshore wind farms that currently supply more than 13 million people with green electricity, and Ørsted's plan is to increase this number to 50 million by 2030.

And according to Corporate Knights, Ørsted's position in the 2021 ranking is largely a result of the company's high share of revenue from renewable energy. At the same time, CO2 and water productivity increased, as the company reduced absolute CO2 emissions by 47 percent. and reduced water consumption by 16 percent.

Ørsted has a goal of becoming CO2-neutral, while the company delivers returns to its investors.

A role model that Corporate Knights CEO Toby Heaps praises.

- By showing how a major company could quickly and profitably go from black to green energy, Ørsted has earned its place as the most inspiring and sustainable energy company on the planet, he says.

Ørsted ranks as the world's most sustainable energy company in the Global 100 index in 2019, 2020 and 2021. When the company took first place overall in the 2020 edition of the global index, it was the first time that an energy company took the overall top spot.

Novo Nordisk, Novozymes and Vestas can also be found on this year's list. Vestas moves up 16 places on the list to number 21.
