Vattenfall has now been granted permission by the Danish Energy Agency to build the offshore wind farms Vesterhav Syd and Vesterhav Nord. The decisions were made based on the environmental impact reports that Vattenfall has submitted to the Danish Energy Agency.

The project has faced several challenges; in 2018, the project's environmental approval was declared invalid by the Energy Appeals Board.

The project has also met with major protests from locals. This resulted in Vattenfall coming up with a new design draft for the wind farms at the beginning of 2020, which moved the turbines further away from the coast. According to Vattenfall, the change from the original design will cost a three-digit million kroner.

The decision to establish the two wind farms was part of the Energy Agreement from 2012.

The Vesterhav Syd Offshore Wind Farm has a capacity of 170 MW. The farm consists of 20 wind turbines, which are located approximately 9 km from the coast off Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality.

Vesterhav Nord Offshore Wind Farm has a capacity of 180 MW. The farm consists of 21 wind turbines located between 5.5 and 8.4 km from the coast off Lemvig Municipality.

The two offshore wind farms are expected to be able to supply electricity equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 350,000 households. Both offshore wind farms must be connected to the grid by 31 December 2023.

The Danish Energy Agency's decision gives Vattenfall permission to initiate the establishment of the projects once the appeal period has expired, which expires on 11 January 2021.
