After hacking: Vestas considered shutting down 50,000 wind turbines

14. FEB 2022 9.50

In November last year, Vestas was hit by a hacker attack. The attack did not hit until the evening and for a period the company considered pressing the stop button for the approximately 50,000 wind turbines, which can be centrally controlled by Vestas itself. Vestas CEO Henrik Andersen tells DR.dk.

He says that Vestas' technicians started investigating how badly the company had been hit. At three in the morning, about eight hours after the cyberattack began, it was discovered that the hackers had not penetrated the systems that control Vestas' turbines around the world.

- This means that we can make the decision not to shut down our turbines worldwide. But we are shutting down almost everything else. However, our entire communication part can continue unaffected. So our email, our teams and our videos can continue. That is a big advantage, says Henrik Andersen.
