THISTED: A debt of 630 million DKK compared to a turnover of approximately 30 million DKK and a deficit of 17 million DKK in 2021. These are the realities for the Port of Hanstholm, which is in a serious financial situation. This is stated by the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Hanstholm, Michael Svane, in a press release.

- When I took office as Chairman just three weeks ago, I initiated - with the support of the port's board - a financial investigation that unfortunately shows that the financial challenges the port is facing are significant. Some of this can be explained by the aftereffects of Brexit and the port expansion, but there is no doubt that the scale is far greater than expected, he says.

Need for help from the municipality

The newly appointed chairman of the board assesses that the situation requires immediate and targeted action in close cooperation with Thisted Municipality, which owns the port, and the port's stakeholders. Therefore, the Finance Committee was informed about the port's financial situation at a meeting on Tuesday evening.

- It is clear that the Port of Hanstholm has massive problems that require money and, not least, a long-term recovery plan. The port has strong future prospects due to new potential business areas such as green energy and more cargo over the quay, but it is crucial that this potential is realized, says Michael Svane and adds:

- It is therefore crucial for me that all focus is now on sustainable and long-term solutions for the port.

Mayor concerned

The information in the report has been passed on to Thisted Municipality. Here, Mayor Niels Jørgen Pedersen (V) views the situation with great seriousness.

- Hanstholm Port is an important part of the business community in Thy, and there is no doubt that this requires action and cooperation. Hanstholm Port, Thisted Municipality and stakeholders in and around the port must now work together to find solutions that ensure a sustainable economy for the port, says Niels Jørgen Pedersen.

According to Michael Svane, it is a broader and more solid business foundation that will secure Hanstholm Port in the future.

- Hanstholm Port must have more legs to stand on. In addition to fishing, the port must expand its business for handling goods and be at the forefront of green energy projects such as wind energy and future energy solutions such as storage and use of CO2, he says.
