With the establishment of the upcoming offshore wind farm 22 km due west of the entrance, the port town of Thorsminde has prospects for growth and development, if Thorsminde Harbour becomes a service port for Thor Offshore Wind Farm.
Therefore, Thorsminde has received both LAG funds and support from the Rural Development Fund to work on future-proofing and transformation from a fishing village to a mecca for energy services.
Thorsminde Harbour has received DKK 150,000 from LAG Struer-Holstebro and DKK 395,993 from the Rural Development Fund for the pilot project "The future-proof village, from fishing to energy", writes Holstebro Municipality in a press release.
- Thorsminde and the local area have historically been centered on the fishing industry for generations, and we still have some well-functioning fishing boats left. There is also a lot of tourism activity, especially in the summer months. Out here, we have always been good at standing together and seizing opportunities when the winds of change blow. And I also hope that we are ready to jump on board when the wind industry hopefully comes here with some of their activities, says port manager Lisette Sønderby.
The project aims to involve stakeholders and citizens in Thorsminde in the development of the possible business adventure at the port, while the town maintains its local life with tourism and fishing.
"The benefits of becoming a service port are many. In addition to increased business activity and jobs, there is the opportunity to develop new business concepts, local activities and association offers. Elements that will make the town visible with more service offers and strengthen the settlement in the area," the press release says.
Both the national rural development fund and the EU scheme LAG are administered by the Danish Housing and Planning Agency. The overall purpose of the support for pilot projects is to promote employment, business development, services, living conditions, settlement and local cultural and leisure activities in rural areas.
