Thor Wind Farm I/S will be responsible for building Denmark's largest wind farm to date, Thor, which will have a total capacity of one GW.
It was decided on Wednesday by drawing lots, which was the solution when several bidders had made equally good bids for the project in the form of bids for the minimum price of 0.01 øre/kWh and the maximum capacity of one GW. This was stated by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities in a press release.
- Thor will not only be Denmark's largest offshore wind farm to date, but also one of the world's largest parks and will play a role in lifting Denmark into a new era where black is more expensive than green. It is enormously good green news that the wind turbine industry has been eager to bid, and it shows once again that Denmark's investments in renewable energy and offshore wind are a good investment for the climate, business and the state, says Climate Minister Dan Jørgensen (S).
Behind Thor Wind Farm I/S are the companies RWE Wind Holding A/S, RWE Renewables Denmark A/S and RWE Offshore Wind A/S.
A total of six parties had bid to build the offshore wind farm, including Ørsted, which has also confirmed that the company was part of the draw. The Danish Energy Agency has not stated how many parties were part of the draw.
Gives 2.8 billion to the treasury
The draw decision was an expression of several historically good bids for the right to build the wind farm. In practice, the bid of 0.01 øre per KWh means that the farm is built without state support.
On the contrary, the Danish support model for state-subsidized offshore wind farms goes both ways, where the state either provides support for or receives payment to the treasury, depending on the price of electricity. With the current bid, Thor Wind Farm I/S stands to pay 2.8 billion to the state and Thor will thus be the first offshore wind farm in the world to be built with payment to the state. The Danish Energy Industry Organization is delighted with the outcome.
- Congratulations to RWE - but also to Denmark. The bids are historic and completely unprecedented, and the industry as a whole has delivered a fantastic result, says Kristine van het Erve Grunnet, industry manager at Danish Energy.
The Danish Energy Agency expects to soon call the concession winner to a meeting to discuss the future process. The Danish Energy Agency expects to sign the concession agreement with Thor Wind Farm I/S within 4-6 weeks.
Thor will be completed at least 22 km off the coast at Thorsminde in 2027 and is expected to produce electricity for at least 30 years. The total investment costs for the wind farm are estimated to be approximately 15.5 billion. kr.
