1200 million liters of fuel are consumed each year by the planes flying in and out of Denmark, and an additional 30 million liters are used for domestic flights. But almost half of this fuel can already be green by 2030.
According to a new report, published by a wide range of companies from airlines and airports to aviation fuel producers through Power-to-X, Danish producers can already deliver at least 500 million liters of green fuel to aviation in 2030.
The report includes a number of recommendations for politicians, who are expected to adopt a political strategy for the green transition of aviation later this year. Because action is required if the report's goals are to be achieved, writes Green Power Denmark in a press release.
- Sustainable fuels produced through Power-to-X are the only realistic way forward if we are to implement an effective green transition of global aviation. The technology is in place, and the airlines want to take off the fuels. So now it's time to get started with large-scale projects. If we want, we can fly with green fuel in a few years, says Jan Hylleberg, deputy managing director of Green Power Denmark.
It will require hundreds of large-scale installations to implement an international green transition in aviation. But it is possible to kickstart the development and at the same time reduce CO2 emissions from the planes that take off and land in Denmark, says Jan Hylleberg.
Before the summer holidays, the Danish Parliament entered into an agreement that will lead to significantly more renewable energy and the beginning of the production of green hydrogen. This makes the recommendation for large-scale production of aviation fuel through PtX possible by 2030.
- We have big plans to install wind turbines and solar cells that can produce cheap renewable energy, and several companies have plans to produce hydrogen. We are well underway, but it is important that we soon get the entire production chain in place - from wind and solar energy to sustainable aviation fuel, says Jan Hylleberg.
Buyers of green fuel must be compensated
If Denmark is to succeed with its ambitious plans, there are some challenges that must be cleared out of the way, says Green Power Denmark.
The price of green aviation fuel will initially be more expensive than the price of fossil fuels. The EU should therefore ensure that buyers of the climate-friendly fuel are compensated with CO2 quotas. The Danish state should also contribute to the financing - for example through the newly established "Green Fund", which aims to promote the green transition in Denmark, according to the proposals from the business organization.
- We will have to share the costs and risks if we are to get anywhere. The EU must contribute together with the Danish state and the companies that are embarking on producing aviation fuel through Power-to-X. Hopefully, large-scale production will lead to rapid price drops, thereby further increasing the appetite of airlines for green fuels, says Jan Hylleberg.
