The first of a total of 72 foundations for the Thor offshore wind farm has now been installed in the North Sea. The foundations are being shipped from the Dutch port of Eemshaven, and each foundation weighs up to 1,500 tons, according to RWE, which is behind the establishment of the wind farm.
- With Thor, we are building Denmark's largest offshore wind farm to date. After several years of planning and preparation, the installation of the first monopile is a very symbolic moment and a major milestone for the entire RWE team, says Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind
Thor will be Denmark's largest offshore wind farm with a capacity of over 1,000 MW and is expected to be ready in 2027. When fully operational, it will be able to supply electricity to more than one million Danish households. The turbines will be shipped from the Port of Esbjerg with an expected start in 2026, while the Port of Thyborøn will handle the secondary steel structures and act as the offshore base for the project.
The project includes several sustainability measures: half of the turbines will have steel towers with a lower CO2 footprint, and 40 of them will be equipped with reusable blades. In addition, hard reusable covers will be used to protect the monopiles before the turbine towers are installed.
- With the Thor Offshore Wind Farm, Denmark is taking an important step towards strengthening its position as a pioneer in renewable energy. We are therefore pleased that the development is progressing and that the project is continuing to progress according to plan. Both local support and constructive dialogue with the authorities are crucial for the project's progress, and we look forward to continuing the good cooperation as the project develops, says CEO of RWE Denmark Pernille Asgaard Haaning, who is CEO of RWE Denmark.
The project will create 50-60 local jobs in Thorsminde, where a new operational building is already under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
