Mammoet, a Dutch company specializing in heavy transport and lifting, has entered into an agreement with Buss Ports to handle foundations for wind turbines for two of Europe's largest offshore wind projects - Thor in Danish waters and Nordseecluster A, another of RWE's offshore wind projects, in Germany. Mammoet writes in a press release.

Buss Ports is part of the German Buss Group, which has over 100 years of experience in port logistics. Buss Ports operates its own terminals in, among others, Stade near Hamburg and Eemshaven in the Netherlands, and collaborates on terminals in Sassnitz and Duisburg. Buss Ports offers tailor-made logistics solutions with a focus on offshore wind and special logistics.

Nordseecluster, with a planned capacity of up to 1.6 GW, is one of the largest offshore wind energy projects in Germany and is being built in two phases (A & B). Thor, with a planned capacity of more than 1 GW, will be able to supply more than one million homes and is Denmark's largest offshore wind project to date.

Mammoet will be responsible for the phased reception, temporary storage and shipping of a total of 116 XXL monopiles for both wind turbine projects at Buss Terminal Eemshaven in the Netherlands. The largest foundations will weigh around 1,700 tonnes and measure 96 metres in length.

The monopiles will be unloaded at the quay via a RoRo ramp and transported using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) with mounted fifth wheels.

The SPMT trailers will then drive the monopiles to storage piles, where they will be prepared for shipping and transport to the wind farms in German and Danish waters in the North Sea.

- This is a complex handling operation where large components for both wind farms have to be moved and coordinated in one place. By combining our specialist heavy transport equipment with our engineering experience in handling monopiles, we are pleased to be able to support the development of these significant offshore wind projects at the same time, says Wouter Santen, Project Manager at Mammoet.

- Mammoet has a proven track record of handling monopiles safely and efficiently. Having them on board already in the planning phase has been invaluable. We look forward to working together as we move into the assembly phase, adds Marc Wegman, CEO of Buss Terminal Eemshaven.

As late as Friday morning, Mammoth was at work at the Port of Esbjerg, where a 2500 ton lower part for a wind turbine substation was transported aboard the transport ship BIG LIFT Baffin with the company's self-propelled SPMTs.
