RWE has identified the Port of Thyborøn as a service and unloading port during the construction of the Thor Offshore Wind Farm. The Port of Thyborøn will thus become the base for the project's service vessels and the control center for managing ship logistics and traffic throughout the construction period. This is stated by RWE in a press release.
The port will also have to handle secondary steel structures for the turbine foundations for the wind farm. The installation of the foundations will start in the spring of 2025. For this purpose, Buss Ports will lease and operate an area of approximately 100,000 square meters and the associated quay in the southern part of the Port of Thyborøn.
- Thyborøn will play an important role in the successful delivery of the Thor Offshore Wind Farm – Denmark's largest offshore wind farm to date. This is where, among other things, our secondary steel structures, such as boat landings for the foundations, will be handled, which is an enormous task. The Port of Thyborøn provides the necessary facilities and port infrastructure, while Buss Ports is responsible for the port logistics. Thyborøn will be the base for the Thor team for more than two years, while they monitor and coordinate all construction activities, says Günther Fenle, Project Director for Thor at RWE.
For the Port of Thyborøn, RWE's choice of the port is an expression of its strategic decisions to make itself an attractive wind port for offshore wind farms in the North Sea.
- RWE's choice of the Port of Thyborøn as a base port for the installation of secondary steel structures and as a construction base for the Thor offshore wind farm is a solid confirmation of our strategic direction, which aims to increase the port capacity for offshore wind turbine components. Ensuring value creation through our investments is a top priority, which is why we are continuously planning and developing new port facilities in close cooperation with our customers. It is a genuine pleasure to welcome RWE to the Port of Thyborøn at the brand new quayside storage area for offshore wind components and with the tailor-made facilities for RWE's installation team, combining both offices and ships in one coherent unit, says Karl Kristian Bro, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Thyborøn.
The offshore installation work for the Thor Offshore Wind Farm is expected to begin in the spring of 2025, while full commissioning is expected in 2027.
