The Belgian contractor DEME and the Port of Thyborøn have signed a contract for the installation of foundations for Vattenfall's Vesterhav Nord and Syd offshore wind farms. The installation of the 41 foundations that will support Siemens Gamesa's 8.4 MW offshore wind turbines will thus be carried out from the Port of Thyborøn. The port informs in a press release.
The foundations that the contractor DEME will be responsible for installing are large steel structures of a total of 41 monopiles and TPs. The 77 m long monopiles, each weighing around 622 tons, will be produced by the company EEW in Rostock, Germany. The associated transition pieces between the monopiles and the offshore wind turbines themselves, the so-called TPs, will be produced in Aalborg by the company Bladt Industries A/S. Each TP has a height of 22.5 m and a weight of 275 tons. The large foundations will be sailed in batches to the Port of Thyborøn on barges during the spring.
- There are clear advantages in that we can work undisturbed at the quay facility in Thyborøn during the installation project, and without the risk of disturbing others during the work in port, says DEME's project manager Jan Van de Velde.
- The port's close geographical location to the offshore wind farms optimizes the project. Vesterhav Nord will be installed 5.5-8.4 km from land, slightly south of Thyborøn, and Vesterhav Syd will be installed north of Hvide Sande, 9-10 km from land. The fact that the foundations can be sailed to a nearby port reduces the installation vessel's sailing distances, benefiting both time, finances and, not to mention the environment. But the port also excels in other aspects than location, says Port Director at Thyborøn Port Jesper Holt Jensen.
- As a port, we have experienced DEME as an incredibly professional and serious partner who has helped push us the last bit of the way. In all modesty, we have also shown that a port like Thyborøn can deliver on the conditions that we have promised and agreed upon. We are proud of that, he says.
