Increased winter tariffs should reduce pressure on the electricity grid

New winter tariffs come into effect on Wednesday, making it more expensive to use electricity between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The summer has seen a record number of hours where the net price of electricity has been negative for those who used electricity while it was cheap. But on Wednesday, a new reality will hit electricity customers, which could cause their electricity bills to rise again.

The so-called winter tariffs will be introduced, where not only electricity tax and VAT are added to the electricity price, but also an additional grid tariff per kilowatt-hour consumed between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

This is being done in an attempt to get electricity customers to move as much of their electricity consumption as possible away from the time when there is the most pressure on the electricity grid.

- In fact, electricity consumption in the winter months was on average 43 percent higher than in the summer months last year, and thus the load on the electricity grid increases significantly.

- Therefore, it is important that customers are also aware of using electricity wisely, says Lise Bering, CEO of the electricity grid company N1.

N1 is owned by Norlys and operates an electricity grid that supplies over 800,000 households and businesses with electricity. Here, the grid tariff until March is 98 øre in the period from 5 to 9 pm, compared to just 42 øre in the past summer half-year.

Shifting electricity consumption

If you can instead shift your electricity consumption to the period between midnight and 6 am, you will not have to pay a tariff of 11 øre. This could be done, for example, by postponing the start time of the dryer or waiting to charge the electric car.

In this way, the load on the electricity grid is more evenly distributed, and in the long term this will also lead to an even cheaper electricity bill, explains Lise Bering.

- Because it is through the tariffs that electricity consumers pay that we, as an electricity grid company, operate and maintain the electricity grid.

- If we can make it cheaper, it will also be cheaper to be an electricity consumer, she says.

The winter tariff during the peak load period varies from grid company to grid company.

At Cerius, which operates a large part of the electricity grid east of the Great Belt, it will be 119.8 øre from October 1st in the period from 5pm to 9pm.

The grid companies are typically owned by the electricity customers themselves and are regulated in relation to the business they can achieve, and what they can use their profits for.

Most of the income goes back into the electricity grid in the form of investments in new cables and new facilities.
