Large heat storage facility in Aalborg to take advantage of fluctuating electricity prices

AALBORG: The municipally owned Aalborg Forsyning is expected to soon have Denmark's largest heat storage facility of 241,000 cubic meters at its disposal when the company phases out the last coal and instead focuses on cheap electricity from wind and solar. This is reported by Ingeniøren.

What will realize the ambitions here and now is the construction of four new giant tanks, each of which can hold 54,000 cubic meters of heated water and thus ensure district heating for customers. The project also includes a 150 MW electric boiler and a 177 MW seawater heat pump, so the city can utilize the cheap electricity when it is windy and store it as heat.

The first tank of 54,000 m3 is already in operation. The three remaining tanks will be put into operation continuously until April 2026, at the same time as the electric boiler is installed. Aalborg Forsyning also plans to have the seawater heat pump ready in 2029, when coal is finally phased out.
