City council member in Frederikshavn Municipality Martin Tøttrup Kelkelund is leaving the Social Democrats and joining the SF, writes TV2 Nord. This is happening after a dramatic city council meeting on Wednesday evening.
- Prior to the latest case last night, I was directly threatened by my own people in an attempt to knock me into place, but that is over now, Martin Tøttrup Kelkelund tells the media.
There has been political unrest in the Social Democratic stronghold in North Jutland recently. Vote-sucker Birgit S. Hansen, who earlier this year announced her resignation as mayor after the next municipal election in November next year, resigned from the post earlier in October, which was taken over by party colleague Karsten Thomsen.
At the city council meeting on Wednesday, a so-called audio file case was debated for an hour and a half, according to TV2 Nord. The case concerns a leaked audio file in which a municipal employee is heard explaining that the employee had sorted out some documents from a file access that is being released to the press and the public.
This happened in a case about Frederikshavn Port, where the economy has been in disarray.
Voted for proposal from the Liberal Party
During the city council meeting, Martin Tøttrup Kelkelund went against the Social Democrats' line by voting for a proposal from the Liberal Party that the municipal director of Frederikshavn Municipality, Thomas Eriksen, should be included in an investigation into the case about the leaked audio file.
A personnel case has been opened against the employee in question, and the agenda for the city council meeting shows that the Liberal Party wanted Thomas Eriksen, among others, to also be included in the investigation.
The Liberal Party also wanted the Danish Association of Local Authorities or another relevant external body to handle the personnel case. However, the Liberal Party's proposal was rejected, and Martin Tøttrup Kelkelund then slammed the door on the Social Democrats.
Despite his exit, the party still holds 16 of the 29 seats in the city council and thus has a majority alone. SF will double its number of city council members from one to two.
