NKT has signed the final contract for the Eastern Green Link 3 cable project with a joint venture between the British grid operators National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission. With a value of more than 2.2 billion euros (approximately 16.4 billion DKK), this is the largest single cable order in the company's history. The company was appointed as the preferred supplier for the project in September 2025, and now the final contract has been signed, the cable manufacturer says in a press release.
The project includes the design, production and installation of a 525 kV HVDC cable system with a total route length of approximately 680 km divided into both land and sea sections. The connection will have a capacity of up to 2 GW. The customer is responsible for the construction work itself, while the order has been added to the order book of NKT's high voltage business.
- The contract for EGL3 is an important milestone for NKT and for the development of the UK electricity grid. We are proud to take this important step together with National Grid and SSEN Transmission. It builds on our long-standing collaboration and reflects the trust our partners have in us as we work together to advance the UK energy transition. With our significant expertise in HVDC technology, we look forward to delivering the cable system that will strengthen the transmission grid and support a more stable and clean energy supply in the future, says Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT.
Eastern Green Link 3 is described as the largest investment in the transmission grid in the history of the UK. The cable connection will transport renewable energy from northern Scotland to consumption centres in southern Britain and help reduce bottlenecks in the electricity grid. The project is part of a wider programme of strategic grid expansions to increase capacity on the national transmission grid and support the transmission of renewable energy across the country.
- The contract signing is a significant milestone for EGL3 and for the joint venture between National Grid and SSEN Transmission. By working with world-class suppliers, we are investing in infrastructure that will reduce bottleneck costs, strengthen energy security and ensure that more clean electricity can flow to homes and businesses across the country. At the same time, we are supporting jobs and economic growth in the regions, says Mark Brackley, Project Director for EGL3 at National Grid.
Eastern Green Link 3 is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2033.
