Less CO2 capture reduces climate accounts

Denmark is still on track to meet its climate target by 2030, but the margin has narrowed in the past year.

Denmark is still expected to achieve the climate target in 2030 of a 70 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the base year 1990. This is shown by the annual climate projection from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities.

But the margin has become smaller compared to the latest projection from officials in 2025. Here, Denmark was to reduce by 72 percent in 2030. Now Denmark is estimated to reach the target of a 70 percent reduction just in time.

In the 2025 projection, Denmark was expected to have a plus of 1.5 million tons of CO2. Now the plus is down to 0.4 million tons of CO2. According to the projection, this is mainly due to the fact that capture and storage of CO2 - the so-called CCS technology - is now expected to contribute fewer reductions than previously assumed.

The fact that there will be more pigs in Denmark also contributes negatively to the climate accounts. Emissions from pigs increase by 0.1 million tons of CO2 in the new projection.

After the latest projection in 2025, the government's independent expert body, the Climate Council, pointed out that there was uncertainty associated with the government's climate policy. It was therefore not certain that the climate target for 2030 would be met.

The Climate Council pointed out, among other things, a "great risk" that the expectation of reductions from CO2 capture and storage was overestimated. And the Ministry of Climate has now also written down those expectations.

The Ministry of Climate publishes the climate projection every spring. Last year was the first time that the ministry assessed that Denmark is expected to meet the climate target of a 70 percent reduction, which was politically adopted with the Climate Act in 2020.

In December, the climate target for 2035 was adopted by the SVM government. No other parties in the Folketing wanted to be part of the agreement. The government has set the climate target for 2035 at an 82 percent reduction compared to 1990.

In the new projection, it is estimated that Denmark's emissions will be reduced by 80 percent in 2035. Approximately 1.9 million tons of CO2 are needed to meet the target.
