US President Donald Trump is prepared to ensure that tankers can sail safely through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump wrote on his social media, Truth Social.
- If necessary, the US Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible. No matter what, the US will ensure a free flow of energy to the world, Trump wrote.
According to the Reuters news agency, about 20 percent of the world's oil consumption passes through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is approximately 180 kilometers long and lies between Oman and Iran. The route has become a target for Iranian attacks in recent days after the US and Israel launched a military operation in Iran on Saturday. The price of crude oil has risen sharply since the war broke out.
Ebrahim Jabari is an advisor to the commander-in-chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. According to Reuters, he told Iranian media on Monday that Iran would set fire to any ships that try to pass.
Offering American insurance
Donald Trump wrote on Tuesday that all shipping companies using the strait will be offered American insurance.
This will be done through the US government's economic development organization, the United States Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
- Effective immediately, I have ordered the DFC to offer - at a very reasonable price - political risk insurance and financial security guarantees for all maritime trade, especially energy, passing through the Gulf.
- This will be available to all shipping companies, Trump writes on Truth Social.
The world's largest shipping company, Maersk, announced on Sunday that it had suspended its sailings in the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing unrest in the Middle East.
- We are suspending all crossings in the Strait of Hormuz until further notice.
- The safety of our crews, vessels and customers' cargo remains our highest priority, Maersk said.
