Frederikshavn's mayor, Birgit S. Hansen (S), will step down as mayor and take up a job as KL's representative for the Green Tripartite from the end of the month. This is reported by KL.
With the agreement on Green Denmark, the municipalities are facing a huge task of a size that has not been tried before, KL writes in a press release. Therefore, KL wants an experienced former mayor at the forefront to support the municipalities and ensure that they have the right framework for their work.
Birgit S. Hansen announced earlier this year that she will not run for re-election. She has been a popular mayor of Frederikshavn since 2014 with very high personal vote numbers, but has recently been criticized for not having disclosed information about the poor economy of Frederikshavn Port, which the municipality was forced to take over in the spring.
Almost had to ask
As chairwoman of KL's climate and environment committee, she is well-versed in the municipalities' upcoming task of converting large areas into forests for the sake of the climate, KL emphasizes.
- Birgit S. Hansen has been at the negotiating table all the way through the tripartite negotiations. So when it became clear that she would not be on the ballot in the future, we almost had to ask if she would not instead help to get the ship completely ashore, says KL's CEO, Kristian Vendelbo.
- Fortunately, Birgit said yes. Over the years, Birgit has, among other things, chairman of the KL's committee on the climate and environment and as mayor has acquired a great deal of knowledge in the area, which we look forward to putting into play in this work, he adds.
Birgit S. Hansen herself says that she has been given the opportunity to get a very exciting and important job of helping the municipalities to translate great ambitions into concrete reality.
- The tasks will change over time, and therefore KL must constantly be ready and at the forefront of the situation. Therefore, the most important task for me will be to be in close dialogue with the municipalities. I am very much looking forward to that, she says.
New mayor to be elected
When Birgit S. Hansen leaves the mayorship of Frederikshavn prematurely, it will be up to the city council to choose her replacement. S has 18 of the 29 seats in the city council of Frederikshavn and thus a majority.
Anders Brandt Sørensen (S) was elected in June as the Social Democrats' mayoral candidate for KV25, but he left the city council at the last election because he did not want to run again, so he cannot take over the position now. 1st deputy mayor is Peter E. Nielsen (S), while Karsten Thomsen is the Social Democratic group chairman.
The next city council meeting in Frederikshavn is October 30.
Birgit S. Hansen says in a news release on the municipality's website, among other things:
- It has been a great honor to be mayor, and I am deeply grateful to have met so many people in that job. The city council has just approved a solid budget, which also takes care of the finances of the Port of Frederikshavn. So now I am handing over the reins to others, and I will always keep Frederikshavn Municipality in my heart.
